On the test day

You must bring a valid form of photo identification (passport or ID card) to the test. This must be the same document that you used when booking the test online. You will present this ID at the identity check before the test begins.

For the paper-based TestAS, you must bring the signed letter of admission, which you can download and print out from the participant portal. You should also bring a ballpoint pen with black or blue ink.

For the digital TestAS, you must ensure that you have access to the email with the registration confirmation. This email also provides you with your participant number and the exam ID that you need to start the test on the computer.

If you take the paper-based TestAS, you will receive all the necessary documents, including notepaper, on site.

No notes are allowed in the digital TestAS.

Paper-based TestAS: The Core Test takes 110 minutes to complete. After a 30-minute break, the final Subject Module begins, which takes about 150 minutes.

Digital TestAS: The Core Module and the Subject Module each take 90 minutes. The actual examination takes about three hours with a 30-minute break between the two parts.

The test is taken at a test centre under invigilation together with other test takers. In both test versions (paper-based and digital), answers in TestAS are given mainly by selecting one of several options (usually four; multiple choice format). Only one answer is correct.

Paper-based TestAS: For the Core Test and the Subject Module, you will receive a test booklet with the tasks and a matching answer sheet. On the answer sheet, you mark the correct answer option for each task (or the correct digit(s) in the subtest ‘Continuing Numerical Series’) with a black or blue ballpoint pen.

Digital TestAS: In the Core and Subject Modules, you work on the tasks on the computer. You click on the correct answer option with the mouse on the screen to select it. In the Mathematical Equations subtest, you enter the number through the number key pad.

The results are automatically evaluated in all parts of TestAS.

For the paper-based TestAS, you will receive a certificate showing your performance in points, percentile ranks and standard scores, differentiated by task group.

The certificate for the digital TestAS shows your performance for the Core Module and the chosen Subject Module in percentile ranks and TestAS scores. You will also receive an overall score that combines the results of the Core and Subject Modules.

The certificate informs universities about your individual performance in relation to the performance of all participants. The percentile ranks of both test formats are directly comparable. A conversion table is available for comparing standard values and TestAS scores.

You will not find a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ result for any of the modules. There is no general minimum number of points required to pass the test or individual parts of it. Whether and, if so, which result is required for an application and admission is determined by the entry requirements of the universities of your choice. You can usually find out about this on the universities' websites.
